It was a time of defined waistlines, dramatic eyeliner, moto jackets, red lipsticks, big convertibles, and Elvis Presley “The King of Rock and Roll”. I think it’s so crazy that less than a mile from my home, “The King of Rock and Roll” bought his first guitar for $12.95, the house that “The King of Rock and Roll” grew up in is on the same street in East Tupelo as my husband’s barbershop, and I get to experience the fun of creating a plus size outfit of the day dedicated to the Tupelo Elvis Festival that is held every June right here in Tupelo, Mississippi which is the birthplace of Elvis Presley.
The 50’s was a time that I can only dream of living in, somehow I know that I would have fit right in because all of my closet faves are from this era, not to mention dramatic eyeliner is my middle name. I wanted to recreate the “Jailhouse Rock” look of Elvis Presley, but black skinnies and white socks in the Mississippi heat would have been unbearable.
I wanted to make this “Jailhouse Rock” look my own all while keeping it glamorous and conservative, since those were the too biggest ways to describe women’s fashion in the 50’s. This glamorous cutout gingham midi dress by who what wear was perfect for pulling off this look. Gingham is just another name for plaid or checkerboard print, and it’s one of the hottest trends this spring/summer. Stripes were pretty popular back in the 50’s, but gingham is the print of this summer. So I switched it up!
I added leather accessories with the signature moto leather jacket, which was a young man’s wardrobe staple in the 50’s and it’s a wardrobe staple for me in 2017. It’s amazes me how some pieces never go out of style and the leather moto is one of them. I carried a very small leather quilted BCBG crossbody with a gold linked chain to accommodate the gold accents in my jacket and because the “Tupelo Elvis Festival” includes lots of walking I kept it comfy and cute with my black mules.Dress: Target Moto Jacket: Old (Similar)/ Mules: Payless/ Crossbody: Old (Similar)
If you love Elvis Presley and everything about him then you need to find Tupelo, Mississippi… The city that is in the middle of Birmingham, Alabama and Memphis, Tennessee. I’m falling in love with Tupelo and the culture here.
Alabama girl/Mississippi world!
